Fit Tips #10: The Skinny on Carb Intake for a Leaner Body

The red headed stepchild of macro  nutrients.
Carbohydrates have many benefits when it comes to training.  It is the bodies preferred source of energy and is a major factor in
recovery after a hard training session.  BUT, the majority of people looking to get lean are confused on carbs.  Most of the carbs in the American diet are refined, sugary, and eaten ALL DAY.  NO VALUE.  Aim to eat complex carbs in the form of brown rice, whole grains, and oats.  Also aim to eat fibrous carbs in the form of green vegetables.  Limit fruit intake to 1-2 servings daily.  Apples, cherries, and grapefruit are great options.  Remove processed carbs like donuts, cakes, and cookies from your menu.  Focus most of your carb intake upon waking, pre-workout and post-workout.  Your total carb intake will vary based on your end goal, current bodyweight, etc.  Remember when you want to get leaner, you have to make sacrifices.  As a great song once said, "there's no easy way out."
